RARE English Bow Porcelain Lion Figurine c.1755
A Very Fine and Rare Antique English Porcelain Model of a Lion.
This piece originates from the Bow factory (Tower Hamlets, London) and dates to around 1752 - 1755.
Porcelain body with an all over white glaze. The beast is depicted seated on a naturalistic base, with its right paw raised upon a tree stump, and tail looped across its back. A seldom seen figurine, this is a particularly fine example - well modelled and with a good degree of hand-finishing. The head is especially good - expressive and detailed, with most of the delicate needle teeth still remaining in place.
Direct from a fine private estate and entirely fresh to the market after some 70 years in family ownership, this is a very worthwhile example.
For a similar Bow lion, from the same period, compare with the example held in the British Museum, Ref. No. 1959,1102.47.
I believe the lion for sale here to be a superior example.

Date 1755
Mid 18th Century Antiques Material Porcelain
Origin English
Condition In very respectable condition for age.
The tiny 'needle' teeth are mostly still there. One or two have been lost, another has been reduced a little.
There is a tight firing crack (manufacturing) which runs around the left shin/ankle and continues around and under the beast's belly. This line is slightly discoloured but with some careful conservation could possibly be 'bleached' out of the equation....but this decision and work is something I will leave to the new owner. There is also a very minor firing line (again, manufacturing) around the raised arm, where this joins the main body.
Personally these minor issues have not impacted my great pleasure in owning this wonderful object.
