Rare Empire Exhibition Ashtray W&R Carlton China Jackie Coogan WR Carlton Calton Ware
This is a very rare W&R piece produced for the British Empire Exhibition in 1924 - The Ashtray, crested with the BEE logo, has a picture of a cigarette and the motto "who burnt the cloth" - standing to the centre is a figure of Jackie Coogan, child actor of the period, starring in Charlie Chaplin's "The Kid" inb 1921 and as Oliver Twist in the 1922 film - of course he went on much later to star in the Adams Family in the 1960's. Measuring c4.1/4" inch dia, it is in overall great condition at 90 years old - the glaze and colours still good and bright! the only thing worthy of note is a small hairline to one side (see pics) which in my opinion does not threaten not detract from this super little collectable, soon to be antique piece from the 1920's.
