Rare Early John Rose Coalport Chelsea Ewer c.1796

An attractive and rare "Chelsea ewer" shape low porcelain cream jug, made in the very early days of John Rose at Caughley or the new Coalport site. The body, in a hard paste, well modelled with spiral fluting and detailed acanthus leaf moulding, raised shaped rim and distinctive shaped handle. Decorated in the New Hall style in bright pastel enamels. Unmarked, c.1796.
References: See Coalport 1795-1926 by Messenger, page 73 for a discussion of the origin of these late Chelsea ewers during the complex Caughley/Coalport transition period, where it is thought more likely these hard paste examples, polychrome decorated, were produced at the new Coalport factory, but it is not conclusive as some hard paste wasters were also found at the Caughley site excavation.
See also: A Cabinet Of British Creamers, Micheal Bertoud, plates 99 and 100 for other examples.
It measures 10.7cm (4 1/4") long, 7cm (2 3/4") wide and 6.5cm (2 5/8") high.
In excellent condition with no damage, repair or restoration and no discernible handling wear. There is a tiny shrinkage line to the side of the handle from manufacture. Payment is accepted by bank transfer, card payments (via an online invoice, I'm afraid we cannot take payments over the telephone), Paypal and UK personal cheque. If you prefer to pay by Stripe please go to our website where we offer that option and additionally options to "Pay in 30 days" and to pay in 3 instalments, all securely supported.
