Rare 19thC Welsh Tailors Sample Quilt
A stunning and very rare late 19thC Welsh Tailor’s Sample Quilt of large double size.
In excellent condition throughout, of lovely quality and good colours that are bright and unfaded. With just a couple of small pulls and one or two small moth holes it is in remarkable condition as good as can be found for its age. This light weight quilt would make a perfect throw over a duvet or make an impressive wall hanging.
Tailor’s sample quilts are extremely rare and highly sought after. Their origins lie in the making of small typically 2ft x 3ft examples that would incorporate all the types of tweeds that would be available to a tailor. This piece would be shown to customers allowing them to choose a fabric of their choice (a sample) from which to have their suit made. Large Tailor’s Sample and other patchwork quilts are amongst a group of very important Welsh quilts that represent the folk art of the time where ladies would often spend their evenings for months on end creating these beautiful pieces of art, improving their homes with their own work.
