Primitively Carved Ebonised Figural Pedestal Table
The ebonised pine or softwood pedestal table having a plain circular top on a primitively carved pedestal having a carved stylized figure and acanthus leaf support, standing on four shaped ornate legs with original wooden castors survives from late nineteenth century continental Europe.
The table has obviously been in use and as such the top has signs of wear especially to its edges, though it makes for a decorative piece as it appears lived in. All of the components of the table are true and original with no later replacements. She still remains relatively sturdy, with some joint movement to the legs but nothing of serious concern, and she moves on her castors, which are of padouk wood and are original. The table used to once be a tilt top and there is a primitive mechanism for this to the underside but it was probably too unstable so it has been screwed shut.
The carving of the figures and leaves to the table suggests a continental naïve approach, probably trying to emulate a finer rosewood example for instance, this being thoroughly charming. It is certainly rather unusual and probably unique and almost has an eastern influence.
A good decorative statement piece of versatile antique furniture.
