Percy Metcalfe Art Deco Advertising Lion c.1930.
Splendid Art Deco porcelain lion advertising Genozo Toothpaste by Percy Metcalfe for Ashstead Potters c.1935. Beautifully modelled, shown delivering a full throated roar (and showing off a fine set of very white teeth) on a sloping plinth stamped for the Genozo brand on each side. Blue sponge ware finish and clear Ashtead Potters maker’s mark on the underside. Excellent condition.
Sculptor and designer Percy Metcalfe (1895 -1970) produced various designs for Ashstead including these lions which are a slightly softened version of his remarkable ‘Lion of Industry’ produced for the British Empire Exhibition at Wembley in 1924. He is also well know as a designer of coins and medals, it was Metcalfe who designed the reverse of the coinage issued by an independent Ireland in 1928. The so called ‘Baryard set’ featured simple modern illustrations of native and domestic Irish animals. He also designed the harp which appeared on all post decimal Irish coinage.
Ashtead Potters Ltd were founded in 1923 in Ashtead, Surrey by Sir Lawrence Weaver (organiser of the 1924 British Empire Exhibition) to provide employment for disabled ex-servicemen. They ceased trading in 1935. Please contact us for more images, delivery and shipping quotes. Alternatively you are welcome to view and collect at our large warehouse showroom in Llandudno Junction, North Wales (approximately 45mins from Chester).
