Pair Victorian Porcelain Figures Lion & Lioness
Lovely and unusual mid 19th century porcelain figures of a recumbent lion and lioness with her cub on moulded green bases to represent grassy mounds. Decorated in the round with a gilded band around the bottom of the front of the bases. Very finely detailed modelling and decoration. Illustrated in English Porcelain Animals by D.G. Rice, plate 31.
The lion measures 2 3/4" (7cm) high and the base is 4 1/4" (10.5cm) by 3" (7.5cm) wide. The lioness is 2 1/2" (6.5cm) high with a similar sized base. Condition is very good with no damage or restoration to the female. The male has a branched impact hairline running under the base, and part way up with his body. There is a fine hairline across the end of his tail and his front left leg has had a break and been neatly repaired. Again no restoration I can detect. Surface wear is very light slight rubbing to the black enamel on their noses and the claws on the lioness' front feet. Christmas Posting we are posting up until Monday 23rd December!
