Pair Meissen Porcelain Yellow Lion Kakiemon Plates
A matching PAIR of very fine quality, vintage Meissen wall plates.
Hand-painted in exacting and exquisite detail with the famous design known at 'The Yellow Lion'.
(The name is a misnomer as the cat featured actually resembled a tiger more than a lion, but the original name stuck).
The design was first produced by Meissen in the early 18th century (c.1728) and was ordered by / produced for Augustus the Strong. It is inspired by the fantastic palette / designs of Japanese Kakiemon porcelain.
Over the years the pattern has been reproduced and adjusted.
These two plates, affixed with their brass hanging hooks, date to the 20th century.
Each is fully marked verso -
Blue crossed swords impressed '33' followed by what looks like an upside down 'T' impressed 'I.252' painted '374 c7/65'
Both are in superb condition. The only fault is rubbing to one of the painted marks verso.
