Outstanding Alan Caiger-Smith Studio Pottery Bowl
A Truly Outstanding and Monumental Bowl by Alan Caiger-Smith
This sensational bowl, measuring some 47.5 cms, represents the very best example of this artist-potter's work I've had the pleasure of owning....and indeed one of the best pieces of studio pottery more generally.
Notable for both its vast size, beautifully rendered decoration and exquisite colouration, this piece is of undoubted exhibition quality and would make a fine and appreciating acquisition for any Caiger-Smith or studio pottery collector.
The huge, flared earthenware body is tin-glazed and deftly brush painted with an abstract design in ruby lustre glazes. When held to the light and moved, the surface flashes through a spectrum, shifting from bright copper highlights to pinks, cool blues and purples. When placed back down the pot 'glows' with a steady incandescence, an extended echo of the heat of the kiln that it was once subject to.
It is fully marked to the base with Alan's painted monogram, together with other marks and a date cypher for 1995.
The price reflects the size, quality and condition of the piece examples on this dramatic scale and so beautifully fired are almost certainly blue-chip investments and prices for these stand-out pieces are set to move. Secure door to door UK delivery via dedicated private courier (excluding highlands, islands and Ireland) is included in the price.
