Original and Beautiful George II Oak Mule Chest
A really good mid 18th century oak mule chest of lovely proportions and with a fantastic well developed natural and rich colour. The drawers with original handles and the chest with its original escutcheon, the engraved pattern worn from regular polishing over the centuries but still visible and the tip of the batswing depleted.
The top original also and formed of three boards with a well carved stepped and rolled border.
The top opens smoothly on hand forged iron strap hinges. One board with a beautiful dark softened dip in the oak, a really attractive feature where hundreds of years ago by a candle which has burnt right down.
Lovely thickly cut fielded oak panels to front, sides and back.
The interior is original and clean with hand hew oak boards and a candle/herb box with lid.
The drawers retain their original oak linings.
All set on tall and original stile feet, not re-tipped, and all timbers original throughout other than a small upstand on the back - where it cannot be seen – probably added in the 19th to add give greater support to the drawers and enable them to run smoothly. Some evidence of old worm, long since treated and dead and not significant at all. Marks, knocks, dings and bruises consistent with age and careful use.
A lovely example of a really fabulous colour and a solid and usable Georgian oak mule chest, guaranteed to delight.
Dimensions are:
52 inches wide, 22 inches deep and 34 inches high.
For metric please multiply by 2.5 I describe and photograph my pieces accurately and with the aim that on arrival each will exceed expectations.
I operate a full refund guarantee and am always happy to give free, honest and friendly advice.
