Oak Side Table by Sir Robert Lorimer
An octagonal oak side table by Sir Robert Lorimer. This is a very distinctive design, recognisable immediately by the shadow twist of the leg, the style of the stretcher and the complex use of the oak on the top. Lorimer instructed that the grain of the wood was to follow the shape of the table top. The original drawing for this table is dated the 12th of February 1913 and the original table was made for Kellie Castle which is now in the care of the National Trust for Scotland. Lorimer even stipulated where the table was to be placed in the castle. The design was again repeated for the dining room of Balmanno Castle in Perthshire in 1918 and in 1923 for another of Lorimer clients, James Morton, for whom he was to remodel Craigiehall, Edinburgh. Lorimer used a slow turn device with accomplishment and imagination throughout his domestic and his ecclesiastical work. At the the hill of Tarvitt, the staircase balusters are turned in this manner, and at the Thistle Chapel the slow turn predominates. For further information see ‘A Comment on Tradition, Robert S.Lorimer’s antique furniture design” by Lindsay Macbeth Shein, page 24 (plate 13), sponsored by the National Trust for Scotland East Fife Members’ Centre.
