Oak Coffer - Carved Panels, 17thC
I come across a lot of coffers for sale and dismiss most of them because they are too badly damaged, heavily repaired, or just too large and without merit.
This one is of very good quality - it is totally original, has finely carved panels and excellent patina.
It would date to the early years of the 17th Century.
Framed tennon and peg construction.
Measurements 46.5 inches wide, 25.5 inches high, 21 inches deep.
Original throughout including hinges undamaged carved panels, and it has an interior candle box.Provenance Very difficult to prove but interestingly, inside the coffer I found a shirt box dating to Victorian times with a stamped postal address label to Mrs Alison-Johnson of Haughton Hall Shifnal Shropshire
Currently on view in Bexhill on Sea Sussex.
