New Hall Part Tea Set Mother Child Adam Buck
A Very Rare Country House Find:
Early 19th Century pure Regency, Jane Austen Era & Style, Part Tea Set with bat-printed domestic scenes of mother and child after the well known Regency Artist Adam Buck.
Adam Buck (1759–1833) was an Irish neo-classical portraitist and miniature painter (as was his brother Frederick) principally active in London.
Buck was born in Castle Street, Cork. Becoming an accomplished miniaturist in the 1780s whilst still in Ireland, he made a permanent move to London in 1795 - his residences there included 174 Piccadilly (1795–8), Frith Street, Soho (1799–1802) and Bentinck Street (1813–20). His patrons included Angelica Catalani (an opera singer), JP Kemble, Sir Francis Burdett, Thomas Hope, George IV, the duke of York and his mistress Mary Anne Clarke. A major influence on Regency culture (producing plates of contemporary costume as well as genre pictures of family and classical scenes and illustrations for Laurence Sterne's Sentimental Journey), he was himself much influenced by the Greek Revival (the antique furniture, vases - which he collected -, sculptures, costumes and even hairstyles in his works are all ancient Greek). He also acted as a painting teacher, as well as exhibiting more than 170 miniatures and small full-length portraits at the Royal Academy between 1795 and 1833. He died at 15 Upper Seymour Street, London.
Comprising:
Tea pot: 22.5 cm high, 26 cm handle to spout
In very good condition for age. Faint small hairline on spout, small hairline on the base of handle.
No Crazing, no staining, no chips.
Painted decoration and printed illustration in amazingly fresh condition.
Tea pot Stand: 15.5 cm in diameter, two faint hairlines on the rim but no crazing or chips or staining.
Painted decoration and printed illustration in amazingly fresh condition.
Sugar Bowl: 12.3 high, 19 x 11 cm
Marked 1109 on the base.
Painted decoration and printed illustration in amazingly fresh condition.
Small hairline on base, little one underneath the cartouche.
7 Cups: 8.3 cm in diameter, 6.3 cm high.
No damage that I can see, excellent 200 year old condition.
7 Saucers: 14.4 cm in diameter, 2.8 cm high.
6 in immaculate condition, one shows 2 small lines of repair.
Milk Jug: 9.5 cm high, 15 cm from handle to spout.
Handle and spout bear antique repairs.
Slop Basin: 13.3 cm in diameter, 7 cm high
Extensive discolouration.
THE GENERAL APPEARANCE OF THIS SET IS GREAT
IT HAS BEEN LOOKED AFTER VERY WELL
AND IS A RARE SURVIVOR AND A TESTAMENT OF ITS AGE
