This is a beautiful Napoleon III circa 1850-1870 ebony & burl cedar antique jewellery box by Tahan. The box is in excellent condition, with a working lock and key.
About the Maker: Tahan was the premier maker of boxes during the Napoleon III’s reign making boxes for the emperor and elite Parisians. Jean-Pierre-Alexandre Tahan (1813-1892) first established himself rue Basse-du-Rempart in 1847. He moved to 11, Boulevard des Italiens circa 1850 where he remained until 1878 as official supplier to Emperor Napoleon III, specialising in the Renaissance and Rococo styles. He was awarded a silver medal at the 1849 exhibition, a médaille de seconde classe in 1852 and a gold medal in 1867. He used to work with artists and makers such as Cornu and Cremer.
However, the lock that typically identifies Tahan boxes with the name etched onto it is missing. There is no damage to the box so it is most likely that the lock was taken to put into a different box as a Tahan boxes are quite sought after abs command market prices. I have provided below a link to an identical box where the Tahan lock was left within as confirmation of the maker of this box:
The precision of workmanship on this box is second to none. All banding, inlaid brass stringing and block areas of veneer line up exactly with the lid. The brass cartouche on the lid has the initials : C.A.N. Engraved on it. The interior is made of a off-white Dupioni silk and is a replacement of the original. This is a lovely box to own by the premier French box maker of the mid to late 1800s.
