MONUMENTAL Japanese Porcelain Imari Vase c.1850
An Outstanding and Monumental Japanese Imari 'Exhibition' Vase
A fine and impressive example of an oversized antique Japanese porcelain vase, this extraordinary piece stands approx 93 cms tall...the largest of its kind I've ever seen.
The vast porcelain body is brilliantly potted and richly decorated in the Imari palette combining underglaze cobalt blue, overglaze iron red, paler powder blue infill and gilded highlights. The design depicting large panels of writhing dragons and phoenix (or 'ho ho' birds) in flight with elaborate trailing plumage, all amid gilt floral tendrils and formal Paulownia sprays and floral roundels.
This 'knock-out' vase impresses both in terms of its monumental size and for the quality of the decoration, which is right up there and significantly better than more regular pieces of Japanese Imari.
Dating to c.1850 and likely made for a specific display, commission or exhibition.
Rarely found quite like this and a must-have for the interior designer seeking the wow factor, this striking and imposing piece would lend itself to many ideas / schemes.
UK delivery (excluding Highlands, Islands and Ireland) via dedicated private courier into your home, is included.
Dimensions -
Massive: approx 93 cms tall.
Condition -
There is an old tight hairline crack running across the base. 100% structurally sound. This crack to the base does not detract from the item when it is on display and the crack does not extend out across the viewable area of the vase, but finishes at the foot on both sides. A few minor surface scuffs to the glazed surface in places. Minor firing faults and surface wear in places to the iron red and gilded areas. On the whole the piece presents extremely well. Email or call for any further information on this item. We give great attention to each and every item we select and offer for sale, priding ourselves on the accuracy of our descriptions and research. We are very happy to provide complete and exacting condition reports (together with further photographs, where necessary) and encourage buyers to request this information prior to purchase.
Accepted payment methods are via paypal, bank transfer, personal cheque or cash.
Viewing of any item in person, prior to purchase, is always welcomed by appointment.
