Ingenious little mid 19th.c. walnut bench seat c.1870. The backrest is mounted on a central hinge allowing it to be used facing either direction. Reversible benches were to be found on trams, trains, boats and station platforms in the late 19th.c.c though there is no evidence of fixings on the legs of this one. Whatever its origin it would make a fine little hall seat being just 15″ deep with attractively carved ends, a solid seat with moulded edge and raised on superbly turned legs joined with side stretchers. Excellent colour and condition, cleaned and waxed in our workshops.
