Mid 18th Century Delft Apothecary Jar
Wonderful Mid 18th Century Delft Apothecary Jar bearing the marks of de Drie Klokken (The Three Bells) workshop.
The jar is in excellent condition the neck rim is intact and merely shows the limit of the tin glaze. The foot rim has minimal age related fritting and there is a small chip to the base (see photos). It is hand painted, with the substance name C Menth Crisp within an expressively painted cartouche.
De Drie Klokken workshop was active between 1670 and 1841 and was located at the corner of Korte Geer and Korte Breedstraat – the exact address was Korte Geer 11a, which now has a newer building, built in 1907 on site.
In 1671 the sign of " The Three Bells " (de drie Klokken) was deposited in the Delft register of workshop marks by Simon Mesch, of whom little is known, nor are the successive owners of the works recorded until W. Van der Does is registered in 1764. His mark was WD.
The Three Bells mark was used up until this date therefore, this jar was made before 1764.
