Michael Cardew - Old Winchcombe Slipware Cider Flagon
MICHAEL AMBROSE CARDEW CBE (1901 - 1983). A RARE & SMALL WINCHCOMBE POTTERY CIDER FLAGON.
An early and scarce cider or beer flagon of small proportions and crafted by Michael Cardew whilst at Winchcombe Pottery in Gloucestershire. This piece dates to around 1930 - 1935 and would have been wood-fired in Winchcombe's historic bottle kiln.
Hand-thrown in earthenware and covered in a ochre/green slip with an undulating wiped design. It's a classic piece, very typical of Cardew's best work with a simplicity and efficiency of design, deftly crafted.
Small jars such as this are less often seen and this example would make a great addition to a collection.
Presented in good condition, free from major faults and fully signed with both the potter's personal and pottery seals.
