Maud Hollyer Ex.1902-3 Watercolour Rocky Coast
This item is a delightful watercolour by the listed and talented Victorian artist MAUD HOLLYER, who has signed the painting in the lower right hand corner and inscribed it verso 'By the sad sea waves. Rochdale.' As Rochdale is inland, we can only suppose that she was staying in Rochdale when executing the painting. The painting depicts a rocky coastal scene, with a rowing boat beached in a small sandy cove, with a rock pool in the foreground where there are several seagulls. There is a small boat far out to sea beyond the farthest headland. We are unsure of the location, but as she lived at Onchan on the Isle of Man in 1902 and at Douglas in 1903, it may be a local scene of that island.
MAUD HOLLYER 1867-1910, exhibited between 1902 and 1903 at the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool. She was one of the ten children of WILLIAM PERRING HOLLYER, also a listed artist, and the sister of four sibling artists, Eva, Gregory, Edith de Chair and Olive Cliffe, of whom Eva was probably the most well known, but all of whom were talented in their particular fields.
Auction results for her work are available at artnet.com (11 listings), artprice.com (23), askart.com (16) and findartinfo.com (5). From research on the internet, it would seem that a lot of her work comes up for auction in the USA and Canada. Her work occasionally appears in Hislop's Guide to the UK Art Market, where a watercolour of hers achieved £311 in 2003.
The painting has been newly doubled mounted in two tone to complement and is newly framed in a 7/8" silver gilt frame. It is ready to hang.
