Margaret Rayner Watercolour Hundred Steps Windsor

We are pleased to offer for sale this historical watercolour by the renowned artist Margaret Rayner SWA, one of the Rayner family of artists, who has signed the painting in the coping stones of the wall to the lower right hand corner. The watercolour depicts an older gentleman with a stick, climbing The Hundred Steps that lead to The Deanery at Windsor Castle. There is a large flock of rooks or crows on the wall and the grassy slopes to the right, as well as on the top of the castellated tower.
Margaret Rayner was born on 30th July 1837 in Derby. She was one of the daughters of the artist Samuel A. Rayner (1806-1879)and Ann nee Manser b. London 1805, who was an engraver in black marble. They had 9 children, 6 of whom became artists and 1 died. Margaret, Louisa Ingram Rayner who signed Louise (J.) Rayner, Richard Manser Rayner, Rhoda Rayner (signed Rose Rayner) Ann Rayner (known as Nancy who signed A. J. Rayner), Frances Rayner who painted before her marriage to Charles Copinger and much later after her marriage).
The only census in which her name appears was that of 1851, where she was living at 13 Berners Street, London W.1. She and her sisters used to go on painting trips during the summer months. Latterly she apparently lived quietly in St. Leonards. She died in 1920.
Margaret painted very much in the style of her father Samuel, which is not surprising as he taught all his children who had talent and she specialised in interior views of churches, crypts etc. She exhibited 36 works between 1866 and 1895 at the Society of Women Artists, of which she was elected a Member in 1880, 1 at the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours and 1 at the Royal Society of Artists Birmingham.. She is listed in The Dictionary of British Watercolour Artists by Mallalieu, The Dictionary of British Artists (Collectors' Club), and the Dictionary of Victorian Painters by Christopher Wood.
The painting has been newly double mounted in two-tone acid free mountboard to complement and is framed in a 1 1/8" bronzed frame to suit. It will be supplied wired and ready to hang.
Image size: 13" x 8" - 33cm x 20.25cm
Frame size: 20 1/4" x 15 3/8" - 51.4cm x 39cm
Medium: Watercolours
Condition: Very good. The colours are strong and there is no foxing. The mounts and frame are new.
