M. Bennett-Oates Watercolour Woodland Badger 1981
We are offering this wonderfully detailed watercolour by the artist Michelle Bennett-Oates, who has signed the painting in the lower right hand corner and dated it 1981. The painting is entitled verso on a label on the backing board 'Badger in a bluebell wood in May', and also bears a label from the well known art dealer E. Stacy-Marks. The painting depicts a woodland scene, with a badger snuffing its way through the undergrowth, with fronds of bracken still in their autumnal hue, with bluebells and the starry white flowers of wild garlic (allium ursinum).
Michelle Bennett-Oates is the daughter of the internationally renowned flower painter Gordon Bennett Oates (1928-2009), to whom she was apprenticed for her artistic training. The family lived in Hampstead, London, but moved to Norwich when she was eighteen.
She initially painted wildlife, as in this painting, and was elected in 1983 to Sir Peter Scott's Society of Wildlife Artists.
She moved to Tavistock in Devon, but has lived in Dumfries & Galloway in Scotland since 2010 and, in recent years, has turned to still life flower paintings in intricate detail in oils on board, although she still often incorporates wildlife. Her work now resembles that of her father.
She has exhibited at the Tryon and Moorland Gallery in London, the Fell Gallery in Singapore and at the Eaton and Oakham Galleries in London, as well as the Elford Gallery in Tavistock, Devon. For examples of her work look on google images or her website.
The painting is mounted with washlines and is framed in a 1 3/4" gilt frame. It will be supplied wired and ready to hang.
Image size: 22 1/4" x 14 3/4" - 56.35cm x 37.5cm
Frame size: 31 1/2" x 24 3/4" - 80cm x 62.85cm
Medium: Watercolours/gouache
Condition: Excellent. The frame and mount are in very good condition.
