Unusually long and low 18th.c. coffer in elm c.1760. Ideal for use as a hall bench or window seat with storage. Six feet long top made from thick elm boards with cleated ends and simple moulded edge. Opens on long iron strap hinges to reveal ample storage inside (internal height 17″) and a small compartment at the left hand side with a hinged lid which forms a stay for the lid of the coffer when open. Inch thick elm boards to the front sides with a large steel escutcheon plate and a deep applied moulding around the bottom edge. Chestnut back and floor boards. Excellent condition retaining the original lock. Particularly good colour, cleaned and waxed in our workshops.
