Llanelly Cockerel Plates Llanelly Sarah Roberts Aunt Sal %%alt5%%
We are delighted to offer for sale, two Llanelly Cockerel Plates which are in themselves, museum pieces. These are available as a pair or individually.
Please note this listing is for one of the two. Please see our other items for plate two.
The plates have a wonderful history. The Llanelly Pottery operated from 1840 to 1920. Of all the items produced the cockerel plates are the most widely recognised and are rarely available to buy.

These plates were decorated by Sarah Jane Roberts (1859-1935) affectionately known as 'Aunt Sal’ It is thought that Sarah started work at the factory in 1873 at the age of 14.

Unlike other decorators at the pottery Sarah had no artistic experience or training. Her style was simply that it was naïve. It is bright & colourful in contrast to the simple homes of those for which it was produced. It was not designed to be of the manner of the fine, beautifully decorated pottery of Staffordshire Potteries of the day.

Today this very style makes it very collectible and a great treasure to own.

These plates as described above are of a basic nature. They are heavy earthenware not fine porcelain. They display all of the original firing characteristics, and show the naïve artwork and the original smudges and irregular paintwork.

The chickens are always very similar to ours shown here, there is a little difference in tail feather plumage. The tear shape ground on which the chicken stand is common. The greatest difference that Sarah chose to display was a variety of the sponge-work border.

The plates are in good, sound condition. The do have light craquelure, firing marks and fine cracking all of which is common to these plates.

Plate Diameter 24.5 cm

The final picture shows the pair, each plate offered individually. Prompt purchase will enable the pair to be bought before 'one of them' sells.
