Lge Silver Table Mirror, G'smiths & S'smiths, 1898
Here we have a superb quality large late Victorian Sterling Silver Mounted Easel Back Dressing Table Mirror. The mirror stands upright with a bevelled glass set inside a silver frame of ornate scrolls. There is an oyster shaped cartouche at the top which is blank. The silver is mounted onto a wooden frame which is covered in dark blue velvet.
The mirror is made in London by the renowned firm The Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Co and dates to 1898. Founded in 1880 by William Gibson and John Langman, the company occupied a famous showroom at 112 Regent Street where they served a high end clientele with goods of the very finest quality. They manufactured at Clerkenwell in London and the Regent Works in Sheffield. In 1952 they amalgamated with their Regent Street neighbours Garrard & Co.
Condition is extremely good with no dings, dents or damage in the silver and no chips or cracks in the glass. The velvet on the back of the mirror has been restored and looks very smart. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The mirror stands 51.5cm / 20.3ins high and is 33.3cm / 13.1ins across. The visible mirror glass is 40cm / 15.7ins by 24.5cm / 9.6ins. All in the mirror weighs 2.1kg / 74oz.
The hallmarks, at the bottom of the frame, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter c for 1898 and the W G over J L makers' mark for William Gibson and John Langman of The Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Co Ltd.
Shipping in the UK is £25 by Parcelforce Express, which covers the value, size and weight of the parcel.
