Circa 1800, late George III oak hall bench. The solid oak bench has a flat back with 4 fielded panels with a stylish top section. Between each one there is a rectangular upright with a chamfered edge and the peg dowels can be seen holding the uprights in position to the top rail. At each end there are 2 simple oak struts that are mortised into the back that come out with a slight dip and finish with a half round. They are held in position at the front by a turned upright. At the seat there are 2 panelled sections in quarter sawn oak. The section between them is again held in place by visible peg joints. The 3 back legs are square and sturdy joined by a long but simple stretcher. At the front there are 3 cabriole legs with quarter blocks, again with peg dowels where they have been joined to the main frame, finishing with a stylised foot. There are turned stretchers between the front and back legs with a lovely colour and patination. The bench is a good size, great colour, and sturdy.

Size 108cm high x 188cm wide x 71cm deep.
