Late 18th Century Oil Portrait Of Elizabethan Lady
FINE LATE 18TH CENTURY OIL PORTRAIT OF AN ELEGANT ELIZABETHAN LADY WEARING HER RUFF NECK COLLAR
PRESENTED IN A STUNNINGLY DECORATIVE HAND MADE PLASTER & GILT WOODEN FRAME SIZE 48 X 40 INCHES.
We are delighted to offer for sale a magnificent and stunning 18th century oil portrait of an Elizabethan Lady painted sitting wearing her black gown with large pearl beads around her neck circled by a ruff linen collar.
The rich burgundy red drapes can be seen in the left hand margin with gold braided edging.
This new arrival is an interesting aquisition as the portrait is set inside a very heavily decorated hand crafted plaster fame, which has been beautifully gilded to provide an amazing effect when seen against the darker colours of the sitters black gown.
The sitter is a beautiful young lady of wealth and of good social standing, who has been painted by a competant hand, capturing her warmth and charm,as she looks towards the artist with concentrated eyes.
ELIZABETHAN CLOTHIN Fashion and the Sumptuary Laws.
Elizabethan clothes provided information about the status of the person wearing them. This was not just dictated by the wealth of the person, it also reflected their social standing.
Only Royalty were permitted to wear clothes trimmed with ermine. Lesser Nobles were allowed to wear clothing trimmed with fox and otter and so on and so forth! Elizabethan Sumptuary Laws dictated what colors and type of clothing individuals were allowed to own and wear, an easy and immediate way to identify rank and privilege.
The materials and even the colors of Elizabethan clothing were therefore very important in relation to dyeS and fabrics.
CONDITION
The canvas is in very good condition, being taut and with no signs of craquelure, although probably having had areas of careful re-touching and overpainting to the ruff colar in the past.
The Portrait has in the past undergone a light clean and re-varnish and requires no further work as it is ready to hang and grace the walls of a period home.
FRAME
The frame is also in good condition for the age and has no pieces missing, still retaining all the heavily cast plasterwork with the rich bright gold original finish.
There has been a fair amount of old woodworm
seen in the rear of the softwood frame, which has occured centuries ago and has long gone.
The frame is of strong solid construction and is a rare surviving example to be seen these days.
The wooden stretchers have been replaced in the past,
but the canvas has not been relined.
DATE
This fine portrait is a striking work of art having been painted after the Elizabethan period(1558-1603) late in the 18th century, which would sit well in any county house setting.
