Taking Of The French Guinea-Man 1717 - study
Modern Study of a painting by John Michael Groves
Original Oil on Canvas
width 1.75m height 1.18m
This striking painting is an original painting by an unknown artist, but is not the original painting by the artist who first painted it. The original was painted by John Michael Groves.
As you will see from the information below, the provenance and subject of this painting is unclear. Whilst this was frustrating at first, it dawned on us that it allows us to enjoy it for what it is. Its big, exciting, eventful and full of character!
John Michael Groves RSMA (1937-2019) was a British marine artist who studied at the Camberwell School of Arts and Crafts, beginning his career as a commerical artist and illustrator before turning exclusively to marine subjects and becoming a full time artist in 1977. He was elected a member of the Royal Society of Marine Artists in 1977 and throughout his long career focused on painting marine and coastal scenes, landscapes and sea vessels, as well as painting historical marine compositions. His main mediums of choice were oil, pastel, pen and ink.
When researching this painting it seems to have two titles:
1. Taking Of The French Guinea-Man 1717 By John Michael Groves
The French Guniea-Man could have been the CSS Alabama
Or
2. is a representation of the Battle of San Juan de Ulúa was fought between English privateers and Spanish forces at San Juan de Ulúa (in modern Veracruz, Mexico) in 1568. The English flotilla of six-armed merchant ships under John Hawkins had been trading along the Spanish Main with the cooperation of local Spanish officials. However, the central Spanish authorities considered this to be illegal smuggling that violated the Treaty of Tordesillas (which England did not recognise).
