A rural landscape oil painting by English artist David Bates (1840-1921). The painting is entitled "The Edge of The Common", signed and dated 1883. It is extremely well painted, perhaps unsurprisingly, as he worked from 1855 to 1880 as a porcelain painter for The Royal Worcester porcelain works where he specialised in painting flowers.

Bates exhibited many works at the Royal Academy, Royal Society of British Artists and the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists. His works are currently on display in Liverpool Museum, Worcester City Art Gallery & Museum and several other art galleries.

This particular painting was sold by Sotheby's on the 6th November 1995 (see information on the reverse of the canvas and stretchers)

The painting measures 106 cm x 75 cm (142" x 29.5")
The frame measures 128 cm x 97 cm (50" x 38")
