Large 20ft Victorian Oak Extending Dining Table

An exceptional extra wide early Victorian extending dining table in golden quarter-sawn oak and with seven leaves. Dating to c.1840 and attributed to Gillows this unusually large 67 3/4in wide table smoothly extends from 6ft 5in to 20ft using a double screw winding mechanism allowing it to seat up to 22/24 or 26-28 people at a squeeze. With a D-shaped top and double moulded edge and standing on six turned and octagonal facetted tapering legs with recessed feet concealing sunken brass and brown pottery castors.
Sympathetically cleaned and repolished using traditional methods to highlight the grain and give a deep honey oak colour to the top, medullary rays from the quarter-sawn cut of the oak produce the attractive ‘tiger grain’ pattern. A double system of solid mahogany runners gives the impressive length whilst the extra legs provide additional support. Any number of the seven leaves can be inserted and the edges are stamped with consecutive numbers to indicate the insertion order. The winder handle is included. Would also make a fantastic boardroom or conference table.
Extended Length - 19ft 10 ⅝in / 238 ⅝ in (606cm)
Closed Length - 6ft 5½in / 77 ½in (197cm)
Width - 5ft 7 ¾in / 67 ¾in (172cm)
Height - 28 ¼in (71.7cm)
Leaves - 5 x 26 ⅞in, 16in and 10 ⅝in (5 x 68.3cm, 40.7cm and 27cm) Legroom - 23 ¼in (59cm) under end frieze and 27in (68.5cm) under inserted leaves
