Landscape oil painting by Oliver Hall (1869-1957)
A fine landscape oil on canvas by Oliver Hall (1869-1957). The painting is titled on the reverse ‘Trees and distant castle’ and dated C.1948. The scene is that of trees in the foreground with a path, In the distance is a figure and a rocky outcrop with a castle. The style of work is that of a thick use of colour and scratching back into it, around outlines of black. Hall’s method of painting in oil was to complete a picture in the studio from watercolour studies done on the spot. The whole is in good untouched condition. The work is mounted in what is probably a slightly later frame of very good quality, partly painted and gilded, which has some old repairs.
Oliver Hall was a painter and etcher concentrating mainly on landscapes. Hall was born in London and studied at the Royal College of Art between 1887–90 but also at Westminster and Lambeth Schools of Art in the evenings. Hall travelled widely on the continent which inspired much of his artwork. He exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1890, was elected RA in 1927 and Senior Academician in 1945. He also showed extensively at the Royal Watercolour Society, Fine Art Society, and Leicester Galleries and many other London venues. In 1898 he had a one-man show at the Dowdeswell Gallery. His work is kept in many public collections including the Tate Gallery, which holds his Avignon, Shap Moors and Vale of Festiniog. Hall was the father of the artist Claude Muncaster
This piece is a lovely example of Oliver Hall’s work and is ready to hang.
