Kent Cottrell S. African Pastel & Book 1934
We are offering for sale this very attractive pastel portrait, as well as a book by the artist Kent Cottrell, who has signed the portrait in the lower right hand corner. We understand from the auction house that this is a portrait of Kathlyn Collisson in 1924. Kathlyn or Kathleen as we believe is her correct name would be 10 years old in the portrait. She has red hair and is wearing a green dress with a white lace edged collar.
Kent Cottrell was born Gwendoline Kent Cottrell ion 28th March, 1887 in South Africa. We have read that she was American, but that isn't the case as, in a list of passengers leaving London on the SS Bloemfontein in 1958 for South Africa, she stated that her passport was South African and that she was an authoress and artist.
From her story in the front of her book, She stated that she wrote and drew as a child and when old enough, she travelled steerage to France to that she could study around the artists in Paris. She spent some time in Cornwall at the artist's colony and also worked in London, where she painted portraits of notables such as Greer Garson for Britannia and Eve, a pictorial magazine formed when the ladies magazine Eve, merged with Britannia, which was aimed at men. She also designed covers for them in the spring of 1936.
In 1935, she was living at 114 Princess Court, QueenRoad, London W.2. In the 1939 Register, she was living with two other ladies at 7 Queen's House, Bayswater and listed as an artist and a widow. We have found no birth record, but if Cottrell is her married name, that is not surprising as we do not known her original surname. Nor can we find a trace of her marriage, so it may well have taken place abroad.
We found one other piece of information in the records and that is that in 1953, she left the UK on SS Uganda bound for Beira, Mozambique. As her first book, a copy of which will accompany the portrait, was published originally in 1953, said that it was the result of ten years travelling round Africa, obviously she must have visited that country on other occasions.
The copy of the book is a second printing in 1965 and is signed by the author. It contains 70 colour plates of her African portraits, as well as a multitude of black and white drawings. The jacket is present in a plastic cover and has some fading and damage, however the cover boards are in very good condition, as shown in the photo.
After this book Sunburnt Africa was published, she then split the book into two volumes one being called Sunburnt Sketches, which covered Africa below the Equator and More than Sunburnt - Africa mostly above the Equator. We are also including a copy of a photo of the artist holding her book Sunburnt Sketches in about 1953 From reading her story at the front of the book, we also discovered that she had visited Austria, but have no idea when. Obviously a very well travelled lady. We have been unable to discover when and where she died, unfortunately.
The pastel has been newly double mounted in two-tone acid-free mountboard and is newly framed in a 1 inch gillt frame with a green central panel which suits it very well. It will be supplied with new brass hangers, new brass picture wire and will be ready to hang.
Image size: 17 1/4 x 13 3/4 inches - 43.8cm x 34.95cm
Frame size: 25 x 21 3/8 inches - 63.5cm x 54.25cm
Medium: Pastels
Condition: Very good. There is no damage or fading and the mounts and frame are new..
