We are delighted to list this wonderfully executed Orientalist Watercolour by the artist J. Schmidt, who has signed the painting in the lower right hand corner and dated it 35 for 1935. The painting depicts an Arab street scene, with the buildings on the right hand side, having the typical screened balconies jutting out from the upper storey and small shops under awnings at ground floor level. There is a mosque to the left hand side, and a further minaret in the centre background. We can't help enthusing over this painting, which, in our opinion, is equal in quality to those of Noel H. Leaver. We will be listing another Orientalist watercolour by this artist in the next few weeks.

Surprisingly, considering the quality of the works, we have only been able to find one other work by this artist to have come to the market in recent years in this country, so cannot offer any biographical information about him or her, and, as we do not even know the Christian name, and there are many Schmidts, it has been so far a fruitless search.

However, the painting has been newly double mounted in two tone acid free mountboard to complement, and is newly framed in a bronzed frame to suit. It will be supplied wired and ready to hang.
