J.R. Miller Scottish Watercolour Dordrecht Church
This is an excellent watercolour by the listed Scottish artist J. R. MILLER, who flourished between 1880 and 1912, and who has signed the painting in the lower right hand corner. The painting depicts a view of Voorstraathaven, a canal in Dordrecht, The Netherlands and The Church of Our Lady or Grote Kerk, with is a Protestant Church and is the only church in The Netherlands built in Brabantine Gothic style. There are Dutch barges moored on the canal and people going about their daily lives, both on and off the water.
J. R. MILLER was a Glasgow watercolourist, who painted coastal scenes and harbours in Scotland and Holland in a watercolour style similar to that of Macmaster and Black. He flourished between 1880 and 1912. He appears, both in art reference books and on the auction reference sites on the internet to be listed as J. Robertson Miller, J. R. Miller, James Robertson Miller and John Robertson Miller. So for the purposes of this description, we will call him J. R. Miller. He is listed in the Dictionary of British Artists, and the Dictionary of Scottish Painters He exhibited 18 works at the Glasgow Institute.
His auction results may be found on artprice.com (36 listings), findartinfo.com (47) and arcadja.com (30). His auction results have also appeared in Hislop's Guide to the UK Art Market, where a watercolour 'View of Amiens' achieved £360 at Bonhams Knightsbridge in 2003. Another Belgian view achieved £690 in 2005.
The painting has been newly double mounted in two-tone acid free mountboard and newly framed in a 1 1/8" ornate bronzed frame. It will be supplied wired and ready to hang.
