Joyce Hargreaves M.M. Not Drowning but Waving
We are offering this mixed media work by the East Sussex professional artist Joyce Hargreaves, who has signed the painting to the lower right hand side. The piece represents an interesting and amusing slant on the poem by the late Stevie Smith (1902-1971) entitled Not Waving but Drowning. If you would like to read the poem, it is available on google, but we cannot reproduce it for copyright reasons. The work has been executed in ink, and watercolours with a collage element, as the dark blue area is mountboard with the compass drawn and the lifebelt painted and superimposed. The lifebelt bears the title.
Joyce Hargreaves N.D.D. trained at Camberwell School of Arts & Crafts, where she met her future husband Brian Hargreaves (1935-2011). They both gained the National Diploma of Design, became professional artists and collaborated or various projects during their lives together. Brian Hargreaves would become a world famous authority on painting butterflies and illustrated many books, as well as designing postage stamps for various countries. Joyce has written and illustrated 8 books and has run the Journal for a charitable organisation called R.I.L.K.O for many years and her works are often on the covers of the Journal. Some screenprints of her work have been on the market, but this is an original.
The piece is framed in a limed wooden frame, presumably to give the appearance of driftwood and is glazed. It will be supplied wired and ready to hang.
Image size: 19 3/8" x 15 3/8" - 49.15cm x 39cm
Frame size: 22" x 18" - 55.85cm x 45.7cm
Medium: Mixed media
Condition: Excellent in all respects.
