John White RBA RI 1851-1033 Watercolour Clovelly
We are very pleased to offer for sale this lovely, subtly toned watercolour by the renowned artist John White RBA,RI,ROI, who has signed the painting in the lower left hand corner J. White RI, which dates it to after 1882. The painting depicts a scene of a cottage in Clovelly, N. Devon, as inscribed by the artist verso. The area around Clovelly is quite steep and this cottage must have been high up, as it looked down on the sea below. There is a lady, wearing an apron, outside the cottage, with a large terracotta jug next to her, possibly containing milk, calling to a little tortoiseshell cat on the path. The artist has depicted a very warm summer day, with a heat haze over the sea, to perfection.
Clovelly is a privately owned harbour village in the Torridge district of Devon, England. The settlement and surrounding land belongs to John Rous who inherited it from his mother in 1983. He belongs to the Hamlyn family who have managed the village since 1738.
The village, which is built into the wooded sea cliffs of the north Devon shore, has a steep pedestrianised cobbled main street with traditional architecture. Due to the gradients, donkeys (now mostly replaced with sledges) have been used to move goods and cargo from Clovelly Bay.
John White was born in 1851 in Edinburgh. He studied at the schools of the Royal Scottish Academy from 1871 and won the Keith Prize for Design in 1875. He was elected a Member of the Royal Society of British Artists in 1880, Member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours in 1882 and Member of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters in 1886, although in our opinion, his watercolours are superior to his oils. He was a very prolific artist and exhibited as follows:- Royal Academy 40 works, Royal Scottish Academy 9, RI 190, RBA 43, ROI 106, Birmingham City AG 14, Walker AG Liverpool 16, Manchester City AG 15, Glasgow Institute 9.
There are 8 of his paintings in the National Collection, which can be viewed at artUK.org. His biographical details are listed in The Dictionary of British Artists (Collectors' Club)
In 1877, he married his first wife Emma Homewood Sanders (b.1857) and they were living in Shere Villas, Shere, Surrey by 1881. John and Emma had 4 children, Allison Sophia 1878, John Stuart 1880 and Margaret Emma and Robert, born 1882/83. However, we suppose that Emma died, but we can't verify this in the records.
In 1888, John White married Rosetta Maud Higgins in Devon and in both the 1891 and 1901 Censuses they were living at Marine Villa, Branscombe. In the 1891 Census the four children from his marriage to Emma, were living with him and Rosetta, although Alison appears to be called Elsie now. By 1901. only Margaret and Robert are still living with them, but he and Rosetta have had Maud Valerie 1891. Peter Ronald 1893, Melville Leslie 1895, Lawrence Arthur 1897, and Leicester Charles 1899. In the 1911 Census, he, his wife and their five sons and a daughter were living at 11 Church Street, Heavitree, Exeter, with his son Melville listed as an art student. He had gained two more children by this time, Allan George 1901 and Effie Grace Mary 1906, as, according to the Census written in his own hand, he and Rosetta had had 7 children, with 6 surviving. Maud had died in 1905.
The painting is mounted with washlines and is newly framed in a 1 3/4 inch taupe and silver designer frame to suit. It will be supplied with new brass hangers, new brass picture wire and will be ready to hang.
