John Shapland 1865-1929 W/Col. Menton
We are delighted to offer for sale this very large, superb watercolour/gouache by the artist JOHN SHAPLAND, 1865-1929, who has signed the painting in the lower left hand corner. The painting has been titled verso, as he often does, and is inscribed in his hand 'Menton looking towards Italy'. The painting depicts a view of the bay of Menton, with the town in the sweep of the bay, and the coast of Italy beyond. This is altogether a lovely painting with a beautiful colour palette and the artist's Continental views are always much in demand.
JOHN SHAPLAND was a Devon artist, (his surname is very prevalent in that county), who lived at 8 Topsham Road, Exeter and was the Principal of Exeter School of Art from 1899 to 1913. He was a painter of figure subjects and landscapes in oil, watercolour and gouache and exhibited at the Royal Academy, (5 works), the Paris Salon and in the U.S.A. He also exhibited 2 works at the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool, and several at other Galleries in the UK. His principal works include 'Fairy Led' and 'Paradise Lost'. He is listed in the Dictionary of British Artists and Grant Waters' Dictionary of British Artists Working 1900-1950.
His auction results can be found at artprice.com (241 listings), artnet.com (24) and findartinfo (83). His work regularly appears in Hislop's Guide to the UK Art Market. Paintings by John Shapland are becoming increasingly collectable and prices are rising.
The painting has not been mounted because of its size, but is newly framed in a 2" gilt frame. It is ready to hang.
