elected an Associate of the Royal Scottish Academy in 1867 moved to London. He was a regular exhibitor at England's Royal academy from 1865 to 1904. John MacWhirter was elected an Associate of the Royal Academy in 1879 (ARA) and an Academician in 1894 (RA) also a full member of the Royal Institute and the Royal Society of Painters and Etchers.
