Harvesting Time, Redhill 1862.
Signed J Linnell, bottom right corner and dated 1862.
Pencil and Watercolour highlighted with white.
Framed and Glazed.
Provenance The John Ruskin Gallery (label verso).
Linnell was living in Redhill, Surrey, where he lived surrounded by his large family from 1852 until his death in 1882. He was the son of James Linnell, a carver and gilder. A pupil of John Varley, together with William Henry Hunt and William Mulready, Linnell learnt his trade at a young age and while under the patronage of Benjamin West, he entered the RA schools in 1805 at the age of 13. At first he painted watercolours and portraits. He was a member of the OWS from 1810 till 1820, when he resigned to concentrate on landscape painting. Linnell exhibited at the RA from 1807-82, the British Institute and The Old Watercolour Society. He lived in Hampstead then Porchester Terrace until 1852 when he retired to Redhill, Surrey. Linnell was a freind and patron of William Blake, and also father-in-law of Samuel Palmer. He was strongly religious, and his landscapes are imbued with a feeling of the grandeur of nature. His subjects are mostly of country life in Surrey. Among his best known works are 'The Last Gleam', 'Before the Storm', 'The Timber Waggon', and 'Barley Harvest'.
