John Gregory Still Life Watercolour Artefacts 1910
We are offering for sale this interesting still life Watercolour by the artist John Gregory, who has signed the painting in the lower right hand corner. The painting depicts a selection of objects including some items that could be there due to the interest in Egyptology in the later 19th and early 20th Century. There is an Egyptian figurine, an earthenware jar with incised markings, a peacock feather (the peacock was associated with the Sun God Ra in Egypt), a couple of leather bound books and, oddly, a rosary.
The old split backing board was partially covered with paper which bore the label of an Eastbourne Picture Frame Maker and Artist Colourman by the name of E. J. Mather at 18 Cornfield Road, Eastbourne. Mr. Edward James Mather was in Eastbourne in 1901 and 1911 according to Census records, but he died in 1923. We will supply this label with the painting.
Of the artist John Gregory we have had less success. We have found several John Gregorys, but none of them have the same signature. We have looked for a John Gregory resident in Eastbourne during this period, but drew a blank there too and it might not be relevant, as the painting could have been purchased anywhere in the country and only framed in Eastbourne.
The painting has been newly double mounted in two tone acid-free mountboard to complement and is newly framed in a 1 3/8" gilt frame to suit.
Image size: 17 5/8" x 9 3/8" - 44.75cm x 23.35cm
Frame size: 25 1/2" x 17 1/2" - 64.75cm x 44.4cm
Medium: Watercolours
Condition: Very good. There is no foxing or fading and the mounts and frame are new.
