We are delighted to offer for sale this stunning watercolour/gouache by the artist John Crank, who has signed the painting C R A N K to the lower right hand corner. This is his traditional signature. The painting depicts two adult magpies perched on a rock and has been executed on brown paper.. The execution of the birds is masterful. We would date this to the 1970s, as we will be listing another of this artist's works of a barn owl, also on brown paper, which was dated 1971.

John Crank was born on 10th August, 1922 in Salford Lancashire and died in Bolton in 2008 at the age of 85. Due to our inability to check census records later than 1911, we can find no further information about his life, but he seems to have specialised in watercolours/gouaches of birds and animals. There are some images of his work on google images, and on the usual auction sites.

The painting has been newly double mounted in acid free mountboard and newly framed in a 1 1/4" black and silver frame to complement. It will be supplied glazed and with new brass hangers, new brass picture wire and will be ready to hang.
