Japanese Imari Phoenix & Dragon Charger c.1900
This is a stunning Meiji Period Japanese Imari porcelain charger of large proportions (46.5cm), beautifully hand-painted and gilded with a phoenix flying among clouds and a fire breathing dragon writhing in the waves. The quality of the decoration is superb and is very much in the style that was such a strong influence on the Art Nouveau movement of the late 19th century and early 20th century. The painting continues on the reverse though the designs are much simpler and less finely executed. It comes with its original wire plate hanger which suggests that this charger has always been displayed on a wall rather than being used for serving food.
This impressive charger would display just as well today as it did when it first arrived in the UK about 120 years ago.
Dimensions: Diameter 46.5 cm, Height 6.5 cm
Weight 3.4kg
Condition: The charger is in excellent condition without chips or cracks. It has never been used except for display which means there is no wear to the painted and gilded surface. There is a manufacturing flaw (see final photograph) on the underside close to the edge which is under the glaze.
Postage & packing: £12 within the UK. Please contact us for a quote if you would like to have this charger sent to an international destination.
