Japanese Arita Imari carp-form dish circa 1710 Japanese Arita Imari %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
Japanese Arita Imari dish in the form of a carp dating to the Kyoho era circa 1710-40. It was designed for use in the Kaiseki meal associated with the tea ceremony. The form is unusual with the front showing the carp swimming above waves. The scales are clearly seen in the porcelain. The reverse is decorated with sketchily painted waves. The potters were aiming for a reasonable facsimile of the original Chinese Ko-Sometsuke wares.
Size: length 23 cm, width 11 cm.
Condition: Good for age. Some repairs to foot rim, clearly seen in photographs and some minor fritting along the edge of the rim.
