James Duffield Harding 1797-1863 Pair
We are delighted to offer for sale a pair of watercolours of rural scenes by the artist JAMES DUFFIELD HARDING OWS, who has initialled JDH in the lower left hand corner of the smaller of the pair with an embossing stamp. These paintings were attributed to Harding by a major provincial auction house.
The smallest painting depicts a view of a timbered farmhouse, possibly Tudor in origin, with a barn attached and shows, in the foreground, the farmyard with a horse, several pigs and some chickens. The larger painting is another scene of a long timbered country house, or row of cottages, with what appears to be a castle with a keep and two circular turrets in the background. This painting, although unsigned, uses the same colour palette and is painted in the same style.
JAMES DUFFIELD HARDING OWS, 1797-1863, was a landscape and topographical painter, mainly in watercolours, but also in oils, engraver and lithographer. He studied under Samuel Prout, and in 1816 or18, gained the Society of Arts medal for an original landscape. He was apprenticed to John Pye the engraver. He exhibited in London from 1811-1864, at the RA (1811-56), at British Institution, Suffolk Street, Old Watercolour Society (143 works) became an A of the OWS in 1820 Member in 1821 resigned in 1846 to become a candidate for the RA, as a painter in oil, but failed, and was re-elected in 1856. He was a small exhibitor as he spent much time in teaching lithography. He was a pioneer in the movement for art instruction in schools and for the training of art masters. Publishd many books on teaching drawing - all supporting direct observation of nature rather than tricks. He taught Ruskin, among others.
He visited Italy in 1824 and went frequently to the Continent after that date. He visited Verona, Venice and Mantua with Ruskin in September 1845. His illustrations in the Landscape Anual (he supplied 24 lithographs for each of the 3 volumes 1832-4, two dealing with Italy, one with France), made him one of the best known artists of his day. His studio sales were held at Christie's in May 1864 and May 1865. Further biographical details may be found in British Watercolour Artists by Mallalieu, The Dictionary of Victorian Painters by Christopher Wood and details of his exhibited works may be found in Graves Dictionary.
Examples of his works may be found in the British Museum, the Victorian and Albert Museum, the Ashmolean, Ulster Museum and many large provincial art galleries. Many pages of his auction results may be found at artprice.com, findartinfo.com and artnet.com. He auction results may also be found in Hislop's Guide to the UK Art Market.
Both paintings have been newly double mounted to complement and newly framed as a pair, in a 3cm gilt frame. They are ready to hang.
