James Campbell vase
A James Campbell vase standing 38cm high and measuring 7cm in diameter at the base.
James Campbell (1942 -2019) was born in Cawdor, Scotland, and was influenced by the famous ceramicist Gordon Baldin whilst at Eton where Gordon Baldwin taught ceramics and sculpture. He graduated from the Royal College of Art in 1964 with a first class diploma.
He set up his first pottery workshop near Ross-on-Wye and started exhibiting his pots. He used different forms of clay: earthenware, stoneware and porcelain. In 1973 along with Lucie Rie, Hans Coper, Janet Leach and Ewen Henderson he exhibited at the Amalgam Gallery, Barnes village, opening exhibition entitled 'Five British Potters'. Campbell was the youngest exhibitor. In 2013 Campbell purchased a 16th timber-framed house and studio in Gloucestershire, not far from the site of his earlier workshop and produced hand built, individual pieces using a Staffordshire red clay.
His reputation was such that, in 1998 at the age of 56 and, for three years, he served on the Arts Council of Wales, Art and Crafts Advisory Panel and in 2002 was appointed as a Selector, for the Arts and Crafts Exhibition, National Eisteddfod of Wales.
James had the satisfaction of seeing his work displayed in the in public collections in the Aberdeen and Dundee Art Galleries in Scotland, the National Library and National Museum and Gallery of Wales in Aberystwyth, the Manchester City Art Gallery and in Australia at the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne and in Japan at the Tokoname Institute of Ceramic Art.
The vase is in very good condition and free from any damage. Incised signature to base as shown.
