Jacob Brooks Pre-Raphaelite Watercolour

1 of 6
We are delighted to offer for sale this lovely Pre-Raphaelite influenced watercolour by the artist JACOB BROOKS, who has signed the painting in the lower left hand corner and entitled it verso 'Spring'. In view of the classical draperies worn by the subject and the fact that she is carrying a sprig of flowers, both we and the auction house and possibly the previous owner of the painting, consider that this is a representation of Chloris, the Greek Goddess of Spring, the Greek version of the Roman Goddess Flora.
The artist obviously enjoyed painting this subject, as he also painted a very similar version in oil, which was auctioned in Germany some years ago for a considerable sum. A photo of this painting may be viewed at artnet.com.
JACOB BROOKS, was born in Birmingham in 1877 and studied at Birmingham School of Art, at the Antwerp Academy and later in Cape Town. He painted in both oil and watercolour, although principally in watercolour, his subjects including landscapes, genre and portraits. He was also a poster designer. He lived at Edgbaston in Birmingham, although he also worked on the Continent and in South Africa.
He exhibited at The Royal Academy, Royal Scottish Academy, Glasgow Institute, Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour and Royal Society of Artists in Birmingham. His biographical details, such as are known, can be found in The Dictionary of British Artists by The Collectors Club and The Dictionary of British Artists by Grant Waters. As his work appears to rarely come to the market in recent years, his few auction results can be found at the usual sites.
The painting has been newly triple mounted in two tone to complement and the painting is newly framed in a 1 1/4" dull mottled gilt frame. It is ready to hang.
