This is a delicately rendered antique Indian miniature painting of three figures within a wide decorative border, now displayed within a relatively modern gilt frame. The image shows an Emperor kneeling on an elaborate chair with an attendant behind him receiving a dignitary. The Emperor is possibly Humayun, the second Mughul Emperor who ruled India between 1530 and 1540, and again between 1555 and his death in 1556. He died after falling headlong down a flight of stairs and receiving a blow to his right temple.

The colours are quite muted compared to many Indian miniatures. The painting was removed from the frame, inspected and photographed before being replaced and resealed. The reverse of the painting is blank with the exception of some Arabic script and what we presume was the price of 65 Rupees. There are some old glue marks suggesting that it was removed from an earlier mount.
