Impressive ‘Monastery’ Solid Oak Refectory Table

Reputedly from a monastery, this huge and impressive table is solid oak and is exceptionally heavy and beautiful.
The enormous slab top comprises three 2.75 inch deep single boards, peg jointed to the well shaped trestle legs on sleigh feet. The legs united by the original single plank oak stretcher. All peg jointed also.
The table is naturally sun bleached but is a richer warmer colour than our photos show on this dull wet day in Sussex - unfortunately we had to photograph outside as the table is too large to take into our studio.
Shown here with a set of ten 19th century ash and elm ladderback chairs, the table would also work really well with stick back Windsor chairs or with a set of early country oak chairs.
There are a few patched repairs to the top, some small old repairs the feet which are very well blended, a couple of old worm holes (long dead) and natural dings, marks, cracks and dents – all of which add to its character and charm and show the table’s long history and use. There are a couple of shallow dips in the top (old candle burns) and natural attractive wear to the feet and stretchers.
This table is rock solid and level and it does not dismantle and so careful measuring of doorways and corridors would be much appreciated. The table has a wax finish and is very tactile – the surfaces worn as smooth as silk from all the hands, washing, waxing and care it has received.
A strong pair of hands will be needed to assist the courier with offloading or a two man delivery team will be needed (close to your property please).
A really superb and enormous antique table, approximately 170 years old, which will provide excellent service for many centuries to come.
Dimensions are:
87 inches long, 35 inches wide and 30 inches high and the top boards are 2.5 inches deep.
For metric please multiply by 2.5 I describe and photograph my pieces accurately and with the aim that on arrival each will exceed expectations.
I operate a full refund guarantee and am always happy to give free, honest and friendly advice.
