Ian Pethers ink & watercolour painting Cotehele
This is a small framed ink and watercolour drawing titled 'Babbling Brook Cotehele Cornwall' by Ian Pethers RBA, signed bottom right by the artist, C.1980s to 1990s. This charming image, captured in Spring, has water issuing from a hole in a granite wall and being channelled between rocks covered in yellow and pink flowering primulas with a butterfly fluttering above the flowing water.
Cotehele is a medieval house with Tudor additions, situated in the parish of Calstock in the east of Cornwall, England, and now belonging to the National Trust. It is a rambling granite and slate-stone manor house on the banks of the River Tamar that has been little changed over five centuries.
Dimensions: Frame - 31.5 x 41 cm
Image - 18.5 x 27 cm
Condition: This ink drawing is in excellent condition. Ian Pethers usually signs and dates the reverse of the painting but as the painting has not been removed from its frame we are unable to confirm this. It is presented in its original hardwood frame with a gilded inside edge which is in very good condition.
Biography: Ian Pethers was born in 1956 in London and took to painting at an early stage. His first major work was ‘Unloading Coal in Romney Lock’, which was exhibited and sold at the Royal Society of Marine Artists’ Exhibition in the Mall Gallery in 1985. In 1989 he was elected a member of the Society of Botanical Artists.
He moved to Cornwall in 1990 and has since illustrated several national hotel guides, designed book covers and has designed posters and maps for the local railway network.
In 2003 Ian was elected a member of the Royal Society of Miniature Painters and has won two awards for his miniature paintings of woodlands and Cornish mining relics.
His work is sold in a number of Cornwall based art galleries where individual pictures typically sell in the £250 to £400 range.
