A fine and interesting oil on canvas portrait of Mr Thomas Freer-Meade dressed in hunting livery by Patrick Edward Phillips 1907-1976. The portrait shows the sitter in half length and sitting looking out at the viewer, he is dressed in full hunting livery with red jacket and black helmet. The painting is wonderfully observed with a great deal of freedom to the brushwork and lightness of touch, capturing the sitter with a sensitivity and softness not usually seen in this sort of portrait. The painting is by Patrick Edward Phillips (Signed and dated top left ‘Phillips 1932) a specialist portrait and occasional landscape painter in oil and watercolour. He studied at the Byam Shaw School of Drawing and Painting under F E Jackson, Glyn Philpot and Charles Shannon, 1926–30. He became principal of the Byam Shaw School between 1946–55. Phillips exhibited at The Royal Academy, The Royal Society of Portrait Painters, The Royal Society of Painters in Water Colour, The New England Art Club and Cooling Galleries. The Tate Gallery holds his portrait of Mrs Carter Gifford and many other portrait works are held in institutions around the country. After having studied in London he settled in Maldon, Essex. This portrait is an interesting piece as it is an early work when he had only just finished training. The painting is in excellent untouched condition having been lightly cleaned and varnished. The work is in the original fine quality, silvered and gilt frame in the Georgian manner. The frame retains the original dedication plaque reading: ‘Presented to Mr T Freer-Meade by the V.W.H. Cricklade Hunt. November 5th 1932’. Mr Thomas Freer-Meade was a wealthy Gloucestershire farmer who died in 1946, he was a long-time member of the famous Vale of the White Horse hunt, Cricklade division. The whole is an immensely decorative and interesting portrait by a highly regarded portraitist.
