HUGE! WW2 Parabolic Reflector Searchlight Mirror
A Huge and Rare World War 2 Era Parabolic Reflector Mirror.
A wonderful find and a superb object in every respect, representing high-end industrial / military salvage.
Manufactured by the famous engineering firm C.A. Parsons, of Newcastle on Tyne, this superb mirror is an antique original dating to the 1940's.
Made for the Air Ministry and likely employed either as a search light reflector or signalling mirror.
The concave circular glass panel is vast and provides a somewhat hypnotic and disorientating effect when viewed up close, turning the reflected world upside down and, when at a distance gathers and throws light around to brilliant effect.
Fully marked verso, albeit indistinctly, with stencilled / painted details reading..
C.A. PARSONS & CO.
NEWCASTLE ON TYNE
PARA 24 x 10
No. 15548
27/11/44
(All above a military Crows-foot cypher)
There is also a tiny impressed mark reading CA 1.
The front with a small etched crown and 'AM' (denoting the Air Ministry).
The mirror is safely secured into an old bespoke wooden frame, as shown, with a pair of metal straps verso, keeping it in place. There is a tightening wheel or clamp to each side, from where it probably located into a hanging or tripod assembly in its previous role.
This is an awesome object and increasingly hard to find in such good and original condition such as this. Not only does this piece provide a most engaging link back our industrial wartime past, but it also makes for a brilliant display piece for the home, either mounted on the wall as a piece of art or, with some time and thought, suspended or secured upright perhaps, on a dedicated stand.
A brilliant thing.
Dimensions -
The mirror itself, 60 cms diameter.
Condition -
In excellent condition for age.
The glass good, clean and bright with some minor surface marks and scratching - all very acceptable and with nothing which detracts too much. No major faults.
The wooden frame with some surface marks and small losses etc.
The metal straps to the rear with a little surface scale.
All in all, as good as you're likely to find.
